Lady Tigers drop heartbreaker in Darton tourney
Leesburg, Ga Shelton State 5 Andrew College 4
Southern Union 6 Andrew College 2
Finally, playing in some warm weather, the Lady Tigers jumped on Shelton State for 4 runs in the top of the 1st, but couldn’t hold on, and fell 5-4 in Game 1. Brittany Ellington and Brandie Monroe drew walks to start the game, and after Ashley Phillips was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Ashley Ledford doubled in 3 runs. Kayla Lumley followed with an RBI single to stake Amanda Pollock to a 4-0 lead. The Lady Tigers stranded runners at 2nd & 3rd in the second, and could not sustain their early momentum. Pollock pitched brilliantly, striking out 6, and keeping Shelton off balance all game. Allowing 3 earned runs, Pollock was undone by an error with 2 outs in the 5th that allowed Shelton to creep closer at 4-2. In the bottom of the 6th, a misplayed double was followed by a long homerun to tie the game, and Shelton went ahead on a dropped tag at home on a passed ball.
Game 2 was a frustrating one, as the Lady Tigers matched up talent wise, but just couldn’t get anything going offensively, and were taken apart by a soft throwing right-hander who struck out 8, and baffled the hitters everytime they threatened. Amanda Pollock went 3-3 with a two-run homer and a double, Brandie Monroe and Kayla Lumley each singled, but that was it for the Lady Tigers. Ashley Ledford started and was effective, but Southern Union got a big hit everytime they needed one, and dumped a few in as they pecked away playing really small ball.
The Lady Tigers have a week off due to the Brewton Parker cancellation, and will play in the Wallace-Dothan tournament next Saturday.
Lady Tigers shut down by 15th ranked Darton
Albany,Ga Darton 10 Andrew College 0
Darton 8 Andrew College 0
On a cold, blustery day, the only thing hot was the bats of the Lady Cavaliers of Darton. The first batter hit an opposite field home run and it was pretty much all downhill after that in Game 1. Amanda Pollock started and while she was hit hard at times, defensive miscues led to 3 unearned runs. Starr Peters managed the Lady Tigers only hit in the game.
Game 2 saw Darton jump out to a 4-0 lead, and ended it on a wild pitch in the 5th, as the Lady Tigers were no-hit to drop to 0-4 on the season. Krista Posey actually pitched well in her 1st college start after a shaky 1st inning and showed some good stuff the rest of the way.
Lady Tigers drop DH against Wesleyen College
Cuthbert,Ga Wesleyen 8 Andrew College 0
Wesleyen 7 Andrew College 6 (9 inn.)
Game 1 saw Wesleyen jump out to a 5-0 lead after the 2nd, as the Lady Tigers struggled with nerves in the season opener. Ashley Ledford started and pitched well after the 2nd, but the Lady Tigers mounted very little offense, although the cold weather and injuries have limited them to little live pitching practice. Krista Posey pitched well in the 5th, but 2 errors allowed Wesleyen to tack on 3 runs and end the game after Andrew could mount no threat in the bottom half of the 5th. Kayla Lumley had two hits at the plate and Kayla McGlashan had one, as Lumley was hitting from the left side of the plate after spending all fall and most of preseason hitting right-handed.
Game 2 saw the Lady Tigers snatch defeat from jaws of victory. After taking leads of 2-1 and 5-4, the Lady Tigers had a costly error in the bottom of the 7th, that left the door open for Wesleyen to tie the game with a 2-out single. Wesleyen again had a 2-out single to push across a run in the tiebreaker 8th inning, although the Lady Tigers answered in their half to force a 9th inning. After allowing another run in the 9th inning tiebreaker, the Lady Tigers stranded a runner at 3rd to end the game.
Amanda Pollock pitched 9 innings of outstanding ball in Game 2. She struck out 6, allowed 7 hits and only 3 earned runs. The defense let her down and even 1 made play would have given her the win. At the plate, Pollock gave the Lady Tigers a 2-1 lead with an inside-the-park homer in the 2nd, driving in two. Kayla Lumley continued her hot hitting with a 2-run double in the 5th that tied the game at 4-4 for the Lady Tigers. Lumley again had 2 hits for the game. Starr Peters had an RBI groundout that gave the Lady Tigers the lead at 5-4 in the 5th and Kayla McGlashan tied the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the 8th inning tiebreaker with a long sacrifice fly. Brittany Ellington, Ashley Ledford and Tempa Fuller all collected their 1st collegiate hit in Game 2.
