Upward Bound students are Scholar's Bowl Champions

On Saturday, March 11, 2006, the Andrew College Upward Bound students participatedin the Georgia Association of Special Programs Personnel Scholars’ Bowl competition at the Calloway Garden Resort in Pine Mountain, Georgia, where they won first place! The competition consisted of schools from all over the state. The Andrew College team is comprised of 8 students from the following area schools:

  • Calhoun County Middle-High – Brian Williams (Captain), Raymond King, Shanice Blackmon, and Shakendra Strafford
  • Stewart-Quitman Middle-High- Samuel Oliver, Jr., Durrell Moses
  • Early County High Brittney Adair
  • Terrell County Middle-High – Neosha Brown    

On Saturday, April 29, 2006, (Atlanta, GA) the Andrew College Scholars’ Bowl Team will represent the state of Georgia against the other seven states in the Southeastern Association of Educational Opportunity Programs Personnel (SAEOPP) Region (Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee).

This is a huge accomplishment and congratulations are in order to our team, the institutional community, target schools, parents and other partners for their on-going support and hard work to help make our program successful. So, as we prepare for the SAEOPP competition, please keep us in your prayers.

In addition to the Upward Bound program having a successful weekend, the Educational Talent Search (ETS) program and the Student Support Services (SSS) program both had good weekends as well. The following is an update from these programs:

Educational Talent Search

Middle School Essay Competition

  • 2nd Place-Holli Bell (RCMS 8TH grade)
  • 3rd Place-Javacia Howard (Calhoun County Middle 7th grade)

Academic Bowl

  • 2nd Place Overall Spelling (Academic Bowl)
  • 2nd Place overall Writing Exam (Academic Bowl)

High “Q” Competition

  • Jadarelle Stanford (11th grade Calhoun County High)

College Essay Competition

  • Malaya Kight – 1st Place ($300 Cash Prize)
  • Candice Pierce- 2nd Place ($200 Cash Prize)
