Statesboro High School track and cross country athletes gathered in the foyer of the Statesboro High School gym Tuesday afternoon to watch as teammate and fellow student Alex E. Smith signed a cross country scholarship offer with Andrew College. Family members and Andrew College cross country coach P.D. Anglea were also on hand for the event.

Smith has excelled in both sports during his high school years. This year he was honored with the Senior Award for the cross country season. He recorded four personal records during the cross country season, including a personal best. He took 2 minutes and 36 seconds off his best time and completed the season with a 5K pf 22:18.

Track coach Rico Campbell and cross country coach Helen Welle-Graf spoke highly of Alex’s abilities and his impeccable work ethic. Welle-Graf noted that Smith never missed a single cross country practice, many of which started at 6 a.m.  “He is always willing to exceed a coach’s expectations,” concluded Coach Welle-Graf. “Alex is a natural leader.”
