AndrewServes, Randolph 4-H, and Farm Bureau team up to aid students
During an orientation session for incoming freshmen, nearly 50 future Andrew College students assisted the AndrewServes servant-leadership program and the Randolph County 4-H Club in preparing back-to-school packets for local students. With financial support from the Farm Bureau Womens’ Committee, a total of 33 book bags, which included a variety of school supplies, were donated to students at the Millennium Center on Tuesday, June 19.
“The parents of these children were so appreciative when they learned what had been done for their children,” Rhonda Harris, Millennium Center Coordinator, said. “And the students absolutely loved their bags and all of the school supplies. This was truly a kind and thoughtful act by all of the groups that made this possible.”
As part of 4-H’s initiative to enter classrooms this fall and teach youngsters how to lead healthy lifestyles, Andrew College students also prepared bags containing toothbrushes, soap and washcloths, and information about how to remain healthy and active. These bags will be given to area fourth graders when 4-H club meetings resume in September.
“Many students in our area do not have the basic supplies needed on a daily basis to be successful in the classroom,” Kris Peavy, Randolph County 4-H Agent, said. “I am thankful that we had so many wonderful Andrew College students who were willing to volunteer their time to help make a difference in these students’ lives.”
The Randolph County 4-H club is currently hosting a Back Pack Drive for used book bags in good condition. If you would like to donate a book bag to a child in need, please drop it off at the Randolph County Extension Office on Webster Street anytime between now and the end of August.
