2008 ANDREW COLLEGE HOMECOMING

Andrew College Holds Successful Homecoming

Homecoming on the Andrew College campus was a huge success!  Members of the honored Classes of 1958, 1968 and 1983, as well as members of the other classes filled the campus grounds and Old Main.  Phi Theta Kappa alumni from every decade were represented.  Former faculty members were on hand to visit and to reminisce with all who were present.

An Alumni Association meeting was held on Saturday morning with President Laurie Kaufman presiding.  During this meeting, Distinguished Alumni Awards were presented in absentia to Dr. Miguel Marino, Class of 1959, and Mark Churchwell, Class of 1982, for their accomplishments.  Dr. Marino has served as a faculty member at the University of California for many years.  His work in environmental science is phenomenal.  Colonel Churchwell was in charge of a large contingent of men and women in Afghanistan.

Attendees enjoyed the Leigh Mullis Band from Bainbridge during lunch.  Afternoon activities for alumni included a Remembrance Ceremony for former Phi Theta Kappa members at Pitts Library and a reception in the Student Center of Old Main for the recognized classes.  Student activities included soccer games and the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen.

The 55th Anniversary Celebration of Phi Theta Kappa was held in Turner Dining at 6:30 pm.  Billy Wilson entertained the audience and represented International Phi Theta Kappa Headquarters.  Dr. David Seyle, President of Andrew College, presented two resolutions to the chapter – one from State Representative Gerald Greene and one from Governor Sonny Perdue.  He announced the formation and the beginning of the Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship, an endowed scholarship that will be given to a freshman who is returning as a sophomore.

Also honored on Saturday evening were faculty members Dr. Lela B. Phillips and Karan B. Pittman for their work in researching, writing and bringing The Lena Baker Story to the attention of many.  The motion picture is set to premiere in January.  Both Dr. Phillips and Mrs. Pittman received plaques for their long-term devotion to Andrew College's ideals of scholarship and service.

Speakers for the banquet included Charles Lynn, Class of 1963; Randy Braswell, Class of 1978; Shaunn Alderman, Class of 1981 and Krystal Cadle, Class of 2006.  Current Theta Lambda officers, President Julie Bentley, Vice-President Keri Cadle and Secretary/Public Relations Officer Neida Soto assisted with the program.
