Fine Arts Degress and Certificates
The Andrew College Division of Fine Arts offers the following degrees and certificates:
Associate of Arts in Theatre Arts
The Associate of Arts degree in Theatre Arts is designed to provide students interested in Theatre Arts with an opportunity to gain the skills, the necessary degree, and the training for further education and careers in the performing arts and technical theater fields.
Through the study of theatre at Andrew College our students experience the power and value of theatre as a form of multi-cultural development, societal reflection, social change, and communication. The theatrical experience at Andrew helps students gain a deeper understanding of themselves and a greater empathy for human behavior by inspiring them to develop creative and critical thinking skills in a teamwork environment. Because of Andrew College Theatre Department’s large and varied theatrical season and small classroom environment, our graduates have a vast resume of skills needed to succeed in a bachelor’s degree program in theatre or in the professional world of theatre. From building sets, hanging lights, designing, performing, and producing, to attending Georgia Theatre Conference and South Eastern Theatre Conference, to touring a year-long show, our students leave Andrew College’s Department of Theatre with a thorough understanding of what it means to be an integral part of a theatre company.
Associate of Arts in Visual Arts
The Associate of Arts degree in Visual Arts is designed to provide interested students with an introduction to drawing, painting, color, 2-D design, and photography and art history at the college level. In beginning courses emphasis is placed on following directions, effort, and willingness to learn new skills, working from observation and developing the ability to critically analyze artwork. Intermediate courses are designed to encourage students to work more towards expressing personal ideas while showing mastery of techniques and concepts introduced in the beginning courses. Students will also be introduced to the diversity of careers and professional practices in the visual arts.
Associate of Arts in Film Studies
The Associate of Arts degree in Film Studies is the newest program of study in the Andrew College Fine Arts Division. Students completing the degree gain knowledge in and an appreciation of film—history, criticism, and writing—as well as other performing arts, and are prepared to transfer to a baccalaureate program in film studies. Students who desire to enhance his/her academic study of film genres with training in technical aspects of the field can add the Certificate of Film Technology (see below) to their studies at Andrew College.
Associate of Music
Students completing the Associate of Music degree at Andrew College can transfer directly into any bachelor’s degree program in music. Whether a student’s career plans lean toward performance, music education, music therapy, or the business of music, the first two years of college music study remain the same: applied music lessons, theory and ear training, and ensemble experience. This two-year foundation is vitally important to success throughout future music studies, and the small classes and individual attention provided by the Andrew College Music Department give our students a significant advantage in acquiring these indispensable skills of their chosen profession.
At Andrew College, students may pursue the Associate of Music degree with an emphasis in voice, piano, or organ. In addition to participating in our reputable choral program, students have many opportunities to perform as soloists both on and off campus. Our voice students regularly participate in the Georgia All-College Choir and have appeared in performances with regional opera companies and mass choirs. Our student pianists have participated successfully in competitions and master classes throughout the region.
For students who want to continue their music studies in college but do not plan to complete a bachelor’s degree in music, the Associate of Music degree may still be an appropriate choice. This degree gives the musician more than the equivalent training and experience that would be achieved with a minor in music, along with the completed core curriculum as required by the University System of Georgia. Students can easily transfer into and, in a still-timely manner, complete a bachelor’s degree program in another academic area.
Certificate of Musical Theatre
The Certificate of Musical Theatre is an eight-hour add-on program available to students enrolled in degree Programs of Study in either Theatre Arts or Music. Students in this Certificate program perform in Andrew College’s annual musical theatre productions and complete coursework in acting, technical theatre, and vocal music.
Certificate of Church Music
The Certificate of Church Music is a nine-hour add-on program available to degree-seeking students enrolled in any Program of Study or to area church musicians who desire to broaden their musical knowledge. Students complete coursework in church music-related topics including worship, liturgy, and conducting, as well as in vocal and keyboard music. Coursework in the Certificate program can be enriched by short-term intern experiences in area churches.
Certificate of Film Technology
The Certificate of Film Technology is a nine-hour add-on program available to degree-seeking students enrolled in any Program of Study. It is designed in association with the Southwest Georgia Film Commission and HennyPenny Video/Television Production and Training Program. The Certificate of Film Technology encompasses both the technical and performance aspects of the film entertainment industry. Students are trained in camera, lights, audio, hair, makeup, wardrobe, scriptwriting, editing, acting, etc. Upon completion of the Certificate, graduates are prepared for careers in film production and performance, or may continue their education in a BFA or MFA program.
