National Student Leadership Congress
Augina Brown and Crystal Martin attended our annual National Student Leadership Congress in Washington, D.C. Augina and Crystal are students at Randolph-Clay High School. They learned the elements of effective leadership, attended workshops, participated in a mock Congress, sat in the Visitors Gallery and witness The 106th Congress in progress, and met with our Georgia Senators, Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson. They toured the White House, Kennedy Center, Lincoln Memorial, Arlington Cemetery, and witnessed the Changing of the Guards and other historical sites in Washington, D.C.
Middle School End of The Year Summer Trip
Talent Search Middle School participants from all target schools traveled to Orlando, Florida. While in Orlando, the students toured The World Famous Ripley’s Believe It or Not, Universal Studios and Valencia Community College. They also traveled to Cape Canavel, Florida. Students learned about the first pilot launched Space Shuttle. ETS participants toured Bethune Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida. The purpose of this trip was to expose students from rural Southwest Georgia to urban culture, visiting colleges/universities, museums and other historical sites of the city.
High School End of The Year Summer Trip
Talent Search High School participants from all target schools traveled to Memphis, Tennessee. During our cultural travel, students learned about the musical history “Icons” of Memphis. ETS students toured Graceland (Elvis Presley), Stax Museum of American Soul Music (Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, Al Green, The Staple Singers, Ike & Tina Turner), and Memphis Rock ‘N’ Soul Museum (The Beetles, James Brown, and many others). Students also learned about the Civil Rights Movements in Memphis. They toured The National Civil Rights Museum. The Lorraine Motel was converted to The National Civil Rights Museum many years later after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on April 4, 1968. The music and Civil Rights history was interrelated. ETS participants had the opportunity to walk down Beale Street. Beale Street is famous for “Musical Entertainment.” ETS students enjoyed other historical sites of the city. Students visited The University of Memphis and Rhodes College. Students had the opportunity to tour the campus and receive applications and other information pertinent to admissions
. This cultural trip was a “huge” success with our students.
Summer Component/Summer Space & Astronomy Camp
Educational Talent Search (ETS) middle school participants come to Andrew College for two weeks and take classes in English, Math, Science and Technology. ETS program provide certified instructors, lunch and transportation for students during the Summer Component. This year, Andrew College’s Science department sponsored a NASA Space/Astronomy Camp and ETS students and parents participated. Instructors, parents and students looked at the planets through a large telescope. They were able to see the stars, moon, Saturn and other planets at night. Everyone participated in hands on activities, computer aided instructions, and power points during the sessions. All participants made rockets, telescopes, and solar system booklets. The camp concluded with the rocket launched activities and traveled to Columbus Space & Science Center in Columbus, Georgia. Middle school students visited the NASA Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canavel, Florida during yearly summer trip.
Academic Quiz Bowl/High-Q
Educational Talent Search selects middle and high school students to participate in The Georgia Association of Special Program Personnel (GASPP) Annual Student Initiative Weekend competition in Atlanta, Georgia at the Crown Plaza Hotel. ETS middle school students Academic Quiz Bowl competition is based on questions from books, spelling and written essays. ETS high school students participate in High-Q competition. The High-Q competition is based on subject areas such as: American literature, American history, political science, geography, grammar, Math and written essays. Middle and high school participants compete with other ETS students in Georgia.
College Fair
Seniors from Calhoun, Early, Randolph-Clay and Stewart-Quitman attend a college fair sponsored by One Hundred Black Men of Atlanta. Students receive admission, financial aid and scholarship information from various colleges and universities. After the college fair, students attended a collegiate football game between FAMU and Tennessee State University. This event is held annually in Atlanta, Georgia at The Georgia Dome.
College Visits
Educational Talent Search Advisors plan at least ten college visits per year for Juniors and Seniors in the surrounding areas. ETS students visit colleges/universities such as: Andrew College, Bainbridge Community College, Albany State University, Columbus State University, Tuskegee University, Georgia Southwestern State University and FAMU just to name a few. ETS Advisors also implement College Application Workshops and Financial-Aid Workshops for students and parents. The ultimate goal of Educational Talent Search program is to increase college enrollment for higher education.
Andrew College Jump Start Program
Andrew College provides academically talented high school students with opportunities to begin their college studies prior to graduation from high school via a special summer program of study. Jump Start offers qualified high school juniors and seniors the option to begin earning college credits while still pursuing a high school diploma. The intent of the program at Andrew College is to enhance students’ credentials, capabilities, and confidence, while enabling program participants the opportunity to get an early start to their college careers. The summer enrollment program will allow students to take advantage of small class sizes and to receive individual attention from their professors. Educational Talent Search students Jamario Molden (CCHS) and Onlexiux Jones (RCHS) participated in the Summer Andrew College Jump Start Program.
