Andrew Drops Wednesday Affair to Middle Georgia

Cuthbert, GA - Andrew College 4 Middle Georgia 6

The Tigers saw another win slip through their hands on Wednesday afternoon to the visiting Warriors.  Josh McCurry went 6 2/3 innings only allowing 2 earned runs.  The big blow of the game came in the second inning when McCurry got Middle Georgia 3-hole hitter Frank Molina to hit a lazy fly ball that rightfielder Paul Cheeks could not secure.  2 runs scored on the play and it put the Tigers in comeback mode down 4-0.  Andrew College evened the score in the 6th at 4.  McCurry got the first two outs of the 7th before giving way to Jon Black who got the final out of the 7th.  In the ninth, Middle Georgia tacked on 2 runs against closer Chris McKenna.  The Tigers last chance, with a runner on first, was a deep fly ball by Zach Martin down the line that easily cleared the fence, but was called foul.  The Tigers host South Georgia on Friday and Saturday in a big conference series for both teams.  Game time is 3:00 on Friday, and a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:00.

Andrew College pieced together a win on Saturday afternoon in game 1.  George Grote got the start but didn't have his good stuff as the Tigers found themselves down 3 going into the 4th inning.  The Tigers mounted a comeback with two outs stringing together 5 hits.  The inning was capped by Merit Hicks and Justin Fogt who each knocked in 2 runs.  Jimmy Lamourt picked up the win going 4 innings only allowing 2 runs.  Chris McKenna got the save as he retired the final three outs to secure the victory.

Game 2 took three days to finish.  Chris McKenna got the nod for the Fighting Tigers and gave them 2 solid innings before lightning and rain stopped the game.  The game was not resumed until Monday where Rodney Scruggs picked up the action.  Scruggs was shaky, but gave the Tigers just enough to earn the series win.  The Tigers used timely hits, a nice double play, and 2 clutch relief outs by Jon Black to get the win going away.  Josh McCurry picked up his first save of the season to get the Tigers the W.

Game three again found the Tigers with another deficit.  This time they did not have enough to get the win.  Jeremy Gazerro, coming off a nice performance against Gordon, could not keep the streak going.  Gazerro surrerndered 6 runs in his 3 innings of work.  The bullpen did well as Trace Brooks and Cory Cartwright combined for 5 innings of one run ball.  Zach Martin and Ellis Logeman paced the offense for the Tigers, each collecting 3 hits.  The Tigers pick up the action again on Wednesday, when the host Middle Georgia at 3:00.

Tigers Get Back in the Win Column

Cuthbert, GA - Andrew College 8 Lurleen B. Wallace 3

Andrew College picked up a win on Monday afternoon on a cool and windy day at Hord Athletic Complex.  Trace Brooks got his first collegiate start for the Tigers and struggled with his control.  Brooks lasted 3 2/3, walking 5 and hitting 2 other batters before giving way to Rodney Scruggs.  Scruggs shut the door on a bases loaded scoring opportunity for Wallace when he popped up the batter on a 2-1 fastball.  Scruggs lasted until the seventh when the first three batters of the inning reached base via singles.  Wesley Allen, who came in relief of Scruggs, promptly retired the next three batters on five pitches without the ball leaving the infield.  Paul Cheeks (3-5, 2 2B's, R, RBI) and Brian Stewart (2-3, 2 R's, 2B, R) led the offensive charge for the Tigers.  Zach Martin chipped in with 2 runs batted in, along with a stellar defensive play that possibly saved the game.  In the 7th with 1 out and runners on 1st and 3rd, Tiger pitcher Wesley Allen jammed the batter who floated one just over the mound.  Martin ranged all the way from third base, bare handed the one hopper, and threw a strike across the diamond to get his man by half a step.  Chris McKenna (2 IP, 3 K's) came in to retire the final six to notch his sixth consecutive scoreless inning.

Williams doubled home 2 runs with one out. The Tigers were unable to squeeze out anymore runs as Justin Fogt grounded out to end the inning. The only other highlight of the day was Wesley Allen's 3 solid innings of relief. Allen retired 8 straight before letting a runner score in the 6th.

Wadley, AL - Andrew College 1 John A. Logan 5

A bad tone was set for the weekend in the opening game of the Southern Union tournament on Friday evening. George Grote got the start for the Tigers and could not get himself into a rhythm. Grote had trouble locating his fastball and fell behind a couple of batters in the 5th inning that led to 4 Logan batters scoring in the inning. The Tigers offense tried to answer in their half of the fifth when they loaded the bases with only 1 out. The next two batters grounded out and Andrew was unable to score a run with their last real scoring opportunity. Rodney Scruggs pitched the final 4 2/3 allowing only a run in his solid relief performance. The Tigers were led offensively by Seth Reber (2-3, RBI, 2B).

Tigers Leave Panama City with a Split

Panama City, FLAndrew College 9 Gadsden State 7
Andrew College 2 Gulf Coast 5

It took nine innings, but the Tigers were able to come away with their second victory of the young season on Saturday afternoon.  Following a disappointing Friday the Tigers picked up a much needed victory behind the strong pitching of starter Ryan Cole.  Despite not getting credited with the win, Cole threw 4 very strong innings and left with a 3 run lead.  In relief Jeremy Gazerro gave up a 2 out 2 run double in the 5th.  Chris McKenna retired the side in order in the 6th  and the first batter of the 7th  before surrendering a game tying home run to leadoff hitter Phillip West.  The game went scoreless in the eighth, but in the ninth Seth Reber clubbed a three run homerun just inside the left field foul pole for his first dinger of the season.  Offensively the Tigers were led by Vinny Hood (3-5, 2B, 3B, 2 runs scored, SB), Paul Cheeks (3-4, 2 SBs), and Seth Reber (1-3, HR, 4 RBIs).
In the nightcap the Tigers got an outstanding pitching performance from George Grote.  The lefty from Newnan, GA went 5 innings allowing a single run on 5 hits and also added three strikeouts.  Despite his efforts Grote was stuck with the tough luck loss as the Tigers could never get the offense going.  In the 7th Ryan Sever ripped a ball just off the glove of Gulf Coast SS Michael Holmes to plate the only 2 runs the Tigers would get on the night.  Paul Cheeks added another hit in a pinch hit role and also scored another run for the only other offensive highlight in game 2.

Tigers Drop Two on Friday

Panama City, FLAndrew College 3 Gulf Coast 13
Andrew College 2 Gadsden State 6

The Tigers got an early start to their weekend on Friday afternoon in Panama City looking to come away from the Florida coast with a couple of W’s.  Gulf Coast had different ideas as they used 14 hits to make game 1 not much of a game at all.  Jon Black got his first collegiate start and was quickly down in the first when he surrendered a 3 run homer to Gulf Coast clean up hitter David Schulze.  Black lasted until the fourth when he found himself in another jam that reliever Jimmy Lamourt was unable to bail him out of.  The only highlights of the day were three solo home runs the Tigers hit off of Memphis bound starter Ryan Fraser.  Brian Stewart, Merit Hicks, and Randy J Williams all connected to hit their first blasts of the season.
Andrew College got right back on the field looking to even up the day with a solid game against Gadsden State.  Josh McCurry threw well enough to win but the Tigers bats remained cold.  McCurry went 5 and allowed 4 runs on 6 hits.  The Andrew College offense had great chances to score in the 3rd, 4th, and 7th innings but were unable to pick up that much needed RBI hit.  Paul Cheeks, Randy J Williams, and Ellis Logeman had 2 hits apiece, but their efforts weren’t enough to push across enough runs to come away from the day with a split.
